The presidents of China, Xi Jinping, and Chile’s Michelle Bachelet signed an agreement this year to deepen the free trade agreement that countries have been maintaining since 2006. This arrangement provides for the deepening of, among other things, trade relations in access issues to markets, rules of origin, customs procedures, trade in services and electronic. In addition to the deepening of ties, one of the significant innovations was the incorporation of strategic activities such as the digital economy, advancing cooperation in information communication, high technology sectors, and astronomy. Companies from both countries will be encouraged to conduct feasibility studies on building a trans-Pacific submarine cable that will link the two nations. It is worth mentioning that Chile was the first country to establish diplomatic ties with China in South America, as well as to recognize that China has a market economy.
