中国人必须了解的巴西 – Engineering will once again dominate the world.

We are going through a time that has revived in my mind, which occurred in adolescence in Brazil at the time of the military regime.
At that time, Brazil’s economy was well planned, and its GDP grew at 10% per year. It’s was a great incentive for young people like me, let’s take a degree in engineering. For example, I graduated in electronics engineering. Apart from medicine, the other professions considered of little relevance. And so there were a lot of people enrolling in these courses because it was easy to move to some college. Of these people, only the very good got some good position in the market.
However, after a few years, the fantastic development of the financial market arose in the world. That’s why thousands of other engineers and I went on to do a masters degree in economics because we had a solid math basis, it was much easier for us to do a master’s degree in economics than the economics graduates themselves.
I remember that the offer was so great for jobs for masters in banks and brokerage firms that most of the masters did not do the thesis in order not to waste time and the various job opportunities that arose.
I have many friends, who are still in high positions in these institutions, but some ten years ago there was a turnaround in the labor market in Brazil.
People started looking for courses in advocacy, social science, etc. because they were much more accessible to complete and began to have many employment opportunities to be civil servants. It’ss made them have less work, job security and better wages. With this, the interest in engineering and exact sciences in Brazil has fallen precipitously.
The thousands who went to the Brazilian public sector, in addition to having better working conditions, got involved in the process of doing masters and doctorates because, under Brazilian law, these titles give public employees better wages even if they are incompetent.
This practice has proliferated in such a way that it has created an unpayable expense for the Brazilian government since bureaucratic or academic work, in general, does not generate concrete measures and benefits for the country and the population. With this, Brazil plunged into an immense crisis of low professional qualification and a dire situation to pay these civil servants.
The situation now is as follows: there are significant expenditures on wages and benefits of public servants and very few people employed in the productive sector. It difficult for the country to advance economically as it should. Our luck is that we have the best agribusiness sector in the world.
However, we are beginning to have a new cycle of economy and work. With the advent of the “Fourth Industrial Revolution,” we will need to re-engage young people in the high-tech productive sector because bureaucratic public service officials will practically sweep away from the world. The automation will replace them.
The problem now is how fast this is happening, and the educational institutions as we know them will not have the smallest capacity to prepare young people for the new job market.
It will be challenging for some teacher to be able to keep up-to-date on their discipline. The solution will be to share the preparation of young people with technicians of companies demanding the jobs.
A new fantastic world awaits us, but for this world, there will be no place for bureaucracy and public jobs. The way out of the New Age will be to accept innovation and live with the new technologies that will emerge in the coming years.
